Preventive Care Q&A

What is preventive care?

Preventive care focuses on helping individuals and communities maintain and improve their health and well-being. For you as an individual, this includes routine health screenings like getting your blood pressure and BMI checked or having blood work to monitor your cholesterol and glucose levels. For your community, it means confirming that children and adults are up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Why are annual physicals important to preventive care?

The annual physical is a critical part of preventive medicine. It is an opportunity to check in on your physical, mental, and emotional well-being, as well as a chance to have health screenings and blood work done.

Through annual wellness checks, Our doctors can monitor your health not only through blood pressure readings, weight, and blood work, but also learn more about how your family, job, and emotional state may contribute to your overall health and wellness. We build lasting relationships with our patients, which helps us to understand and treat each patient wholly.

Annual physicals are also a chance for you to have a conversation with a doctor about any changes in your health or concerns you have. Our goal is to be your true partner in wellness.

What should I expect at my annual physical?

Our doctors may ask that you have blood work done in advance of your appointment so you can discuss the results together, or you may have blood work done during your appointment. A typical blood panel includes measuring your glucose, HDL and LDL cholesterol, and hemoglobin levels. If you have a chronic health condition or other concerns, your doctor may order additional blood tests.

During your appointment, the doctor will check your height, weight, and blood pressure and note any changes from your last appointment. The doctor listens to your heart and lungs, and examines your eyes, ears, nose, and throat. The doctor will palpate your abdomen and lymph nodes to check for any swelling or abnormalities. If you are due for any other health screenings or need a vaccination booster, we can provide those services during your annual physical as well.

Most importantly, our doctors offer frank, but compassionate advice and suggestions to improve your health. If you are due for an annual physical, call to make an appointment today.
